RE Curriculum

‘An education in the fullness of humanity should be the defining feature of Catholic schools.’

RE CURRICULUM

Religious Education at St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School

Our Core Mission
At St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School, Religious Education (RE) is the cornerstone of our curriculum and the heart of our Catholic ethos. Rooted in our SPIRIT Values—Service, Perseverance, Integrity, Respect, Inclusivity, and Trust—our RE curriculum reflects the Gospel message and fosters spiritual growth, moral development, and academic excellence.

Our Religious Education Curriculum
We deliver RE through the To Know You More Clearly scheme, a comprehensive and engaging framework designed to inspire pupils and deepen their faith. This scheme ensures progression and relevance, building on key themes and aligning with the liturgical calendar.

Key elements of the curriculum include:

  • Scriptural Foundations: Pupils explore stories from the Bible, learning about the life and teachings of Jesus, key figures of faith, and the mission of the Church.
  • Branches of Learning: The curriculum is structured into six thematic branches:
    1. Creation and Covenant
    2. Prophecy and Promise
    3. Galilee to Jerusalem
    4. Desert to Garden
    5. To the Ends of the Earth
    6. Dialogue and Encounter

These branches help pupils deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith while fostering respect for other worldviews.

  • World Faiths and Dialogue: Alongside Catholic teachings, pupils study Judaism, Islam, and other faiths, promoting inclusivity and respect for diversity.

Faith in Action
Guided by our SPIRIT Values, we aim to inspire pupils to live out their faith through meaningful actions, including:

  • Daily Prayer and Worship: Pupils participate in class prayers, assemblies, and liturgical celebrations.
  • Community and Charity Work: Initiatives such as food bank collections, fundraising for local and global causes, and social outreach projects help pupils put faith into practice.
  • Sacramental Preparation: Working closely with the parish, we support pupils in preparing for the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation.

Living Our SPIRIT Values
Our SPIRIT Values are woven throughout the RE curriculum, helping pupils grow as compassionate, faith-filled individuals. These values reflect the life of our patron, St Edmund, who exemplified service, integrity, and perseverance in his dedication to God and others.

A Holistic Approach
Religious Education at St Edmund’s is more than a subject; it’s the foundation of our identity as a Catholic school. By integrating prayer, reflection, and Gospel teachings into daily life, we nurture pupils who are confident in their faith, respectful of others, and prepared to make a positive impact on the world.
